Writing Dream to Writing Career

Writing Career

We all have dreams, goals, ambitions – whether it’s as small as taking a much needed “me” day or as large as changing the world. These dreams are what keep us motivated when life gets tough.

We all want to make our dreams a reality, but is it really that easy?

Well, not exactly.

Pursuing your dreams can be exhilarating and frightening all at once. Exciting, yet intimidating. It involves stepping out of your comfort zone to accomplish your goals, so that YOU make the dream happen.

For me, my goals have always involved reading or writing at some level. Since I was young, I dreamed writing. I didn’t know exactly what that would entail, but I knew that I wanted to write.

I don’t know that I ever decided to become a writer, it’s just who I am – from creating my own stories to blogging about my travel experiences to technical writing for work projects. However, being a writer isn’t the same as actively pursuing my dream of owning a business and turning my passion into a writing career.

It wasn’t hard to figure out what I needed to do to start my journey. It was getting past the fear, the nervousness, the daunting “newness”, that made beginning difficult. These emotions are not uncommon when embarking on a new adventure, although they’re not exactly welcome.

At this point, I could choose to use these fears as an excuse to quit, or as opportunities to leave my comfort zone and make things happen.

Taking the Leap

Supported by friends, family members, and colleagues, I chose to embrace the opportunities, rather than succumb to the fear. And so, Pen Credible was born.

During this journey, I’ve had to branch out so far from my comfort zone that at times I felt overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of it all. Seriously, there is so much to starting a freelance business that I would have never considered.

First of all, choosing a name was almost enough for me to throw my hands in the air and say, “Nope, I’ll keep my boring desk job, thank you very much!” Turns out, choosing the name was the easy part.

I’ve had to research how to register as a business, acquire the right business licenses, file the correct legal forms, learn basic accounting skills because I can’t afford to have someone do that for me, create a website, learn the best ways to make connections, and the list keeps going.

While I dreaded the possibility of failure, each new experience pushed me to grow as a person and business woman. It has been an incredible experience working to make everything fall into place, the way I have always wanted.

Through this business, I hope to use my writing and editing expertise to help others achieve their own goals. Though my writing business is still in its baby stages, I cannot wait (with only the slightest apprehension) to continue pushing my boundaries, develop new skills, and explore new opportunities to be successful!

So what about you? What’s your dream, and how are YOU going to make it a reality?
